heating and cooling

Service Overview
The health of heating and cooling systems can predict a long and productive vehicle life. With overheating the number one cause of vehicle breakdowns, it helps to understand the heating-cooling systems connection so you can ensure the vitality of your vehicle on the road for years to come.
The engine produces a lot of heat—up to 4,500 degrees Fahrenheit. Without coolant circulating in the engine block and cycling the heat out through the radiator to the outside as you drive, parts of your vehicle's engine would melt together and others would quickly corrode from excessive temperatures. In extremely cold weather, coolant also helps to protect against engine freeze.
Yet, over time coolant becomes degraded by excessive heat transfer and breaks down. Debris may accumulate in the radiator and start to corrode it, and the entire cooling system may clog with oil deposits, decomposing hose pieces, and grease, among other particles.
That's why it's so important to change your vehicle's vital fluids. Most drivers understand the importance of oil changes every 3 months or 3,000 miles or so, depending on the vehicle type and typical driving conditions, but the cooling system fluids can be overlooked, to the detriment of the engine.
How can I tell when I
need the service?
Typically, most coolant manufacturers recommend replacing coolant annually, though individual car manufacturer maintenance guidelines often state every 2 years, regardless of mileage. You'll want to change your coolant at least once annually if:
-
Your vehicle has recently overheated
-
Your dashboard coolant or temperature error sensor illuminates
-
Your temperature gauge reads higher or lower than normal
-
Your heater does not work properly or at all
